Nikon D40

The Nikon D40 is one of the most competitively-priced yet high quality DSLR camera on the market. However, as all advertising in the digital camera market is swept along on a tide of ‘greater megapixels’, ‘bigger LCD screens’, bigger this and better that, it’s easy to overlook products that aren’t either the latest model or at the leading edge of ‘feature-rich’ advertising yet which are still excellent products that do the job. In the case of the D40, it is not only a good performer but is light and portable and very easy to handle. It is now available at a very low price (under £300 with its good 18-55mm kit lens) which really makes it a bargain for the advanced amateur or (second camera ?) semi-professional and leaves room in the purse for additional / better quality lenses and accessories.

Yes, it’s only 6.1MPx not 10MPx like the more recent DSLRs in its class (compare the D40x) but then it performs more or less the same and saves a significant amount of money for other things.
